Thomas "Watty" Duncan Watson
Thomas Duncan Watson died unexpectedly, Friday, January 21, 2022. The youngest of four children, he was truly the funniest and physically largest member of his family. An early attempt at infamy not unlike Evil Knievel’s daring attempt at the Snake River Canyon jump resulted in an early injury to one hip. Unlike Evil, Tommy didn’t have a parachute to soften the blow to his injured hip: Trash cans 3 Tommy 0! Despite a noticeable limp and against doctor’s orders, Tommy became a ping pong wizard while forging ahead with his ambition for a surfing career. After a short attempt at college (textbooks make great speaker stands – “Tell it!”) Tommy looked for the best beaches and waves to surf his way to happiness. During this time his culinary skills began to develop, albeit inauspiciously as a dishwasher at Ragtime, Jacksonville Beach, FL. Over time, his talent in the kitchen grew and, never one to shy away from anything (“Aw Yesh!”), he made a name for himself in the local beach community and beyond.
Tommy’s love for fishing leads one to understand the true meaning of the proverb: Give a man a fish, and you feed him for one day. Teach a man to fish (and did he fish!) and you feed him for a lifetime. Tommy certainly fed us well with his cooking creations. He filled our bellies with wonderful food and filled our hearts even fuller with his kindness and character. There was no such thing as a “stranger” to Tommy. A few minutes with him and you’d felt as though you had known him longer than you could remember. A gentler giant there never was. Well done and Godspeed.
Tommy is survived by his older brother Greg (and wife Rebecca, sons Ben and wife Kimberly, Duncan), sisters Deborah (and husband Robbie Bickmeyer, son Justin and wife Kristy, their children Van and Carolina, daughter Lianne and husband Ross Loehr, daughter Juniper and son Lennox), and Jill (and husband Steve Leonardo).
In lieu of flowers, please donate to charities of your choice in Tommy’s name.
A celebration of Tommy’s life took place at the Dolphin Plaza at Hannah Park, Atlantic Beach on March 26, 2022 from 2-5.
