From VLSC:
"THE VLSC & COMMUNITY WANT OUR STATION BACK
VLSC Ocean Memorial Ceremonies for fallen VLSC Members are as important to us as the commemoration of life & legacy would be to any member/group of fellowship, anywhere. The innate need/desire to honor another for the camaraderie, shared life-saving experience, recognition of effort - it’s strong.
The last ceremony conducted by the VLSC from its 111+ year base of operations was that of Past Captain & BOD President, Richard Riley, just over two months ago (Sunday, March 13th) - currently these “rite of passage” ceremonies are not being considered due to the City Manager’s “illegal lockout” - VLSC Families & Past Members are being deprived of the benefit by the City of Jacksonville Beach.
Of what more are the citizens of Jacksonville Beach & Northeast Florida youths being deprived -
* Incubator for teamwork, organizational & leadership skills?
* Being part of something bigger than self = individual growth?
* VLSC Recruits training in the VLSC Station?
* Discipline and gratifying community service?
* A place you “fit in” like nowhere else - which takes all comers as recruits?
* Junior Lifeguards?
* A team who’s creed is “response regardless of time or place”?
* Lifeguards Without Borders?
* Resource pool for local businesses?
Let’s discuss the value of this “short-list”, add whatever you like…pile on!
UPCOMING -
16 May (Monday) - VLSC Captain Jim Emery will address the City Council as part of the public comments period beginning @ 6:00 pm - the public is urged to attend
17 May (Tuesday) - deadline for City of Jacksonville Beach to comply with VLSC Legal Team’s “Sunshine Law” request for all City of Jacksonville Beach communications from, to & between CoJB officials, staff, and/or others"
-----
“As you have heard, the City Manager has discontinued VLSC/COJB negotiations, kicked us out of the station, changed the locks on the doors, and taken every piece of property we have in the station away from us. Jacksonville Beach City Council meeting will be held on Monday, April 18, 2022 at 6 PM. We are hoping for a huge turnout of past and present Corps members along with family and friends. A large crowd will add to the strength of our message. Please arrive early and if you wish to address the council fill out a Speaker Request Card which are located on a table inside the door to the council chamber. As we have done in the past we asked all speakers to be respectful and polite in addressing the council. Speakers will be given three minutes. My personal message will be to the council members, asking them to use their influence to change the current position of the city, begin negotiations again and unlock the Station. If everyone brings several family members, neighbors and friends of the Corps the crowd will be awesome. Bring a chair in case the overflow crowd spills out to the lawn. SAVE THE CORPS”-Bryan Murphy
