All,
The Fourth of July weekend drew the smallest crowd that I had ever seen. The entire weekend was free of major incidents, and the roadways were back to normal after only an hour.
Florida Highway Patrol, Neptune Beach Police Department, and Jacksonville Beach Police Department conducted a traffic enforcement detail during the evenings of July 3 and 4. The traffic detail focused on DUI violations and also provided a visible presence to help minimize DUIs and other traffic violations. The detail netted 19 DUIs, 12 drivers with suspended licenses, 2 aggressive driving violations, 3 drug arrests, and 57 other traffic citations.
Two new police officers will begin on August 2, leaving two remaining vacant officer positions for which there are numerous viable candidates. One dispatcher resigned from the department to move closer to her family who are out of state. There are two viable candidates who have applied for that position, and these are the first two dispatch applicants we have had in years. Our new recruiter, Officer YaVonne Ikram, is doing a fantastic job!
Citizen Police Academy Class XLVII will begin on August 25.
The department completed its annual active threat training for every officer on three training days in July. As usual, it was a huge undertaking, and the training was very productive. Officers and instructors also discussed circumstances pertaining to recent active shooter incidents across the country.
