News You Can Use, From the Jacksonville Beach Police Chief. Gene Paul Smith.
"All,
Memorial Weekend came and went without any major incidents. The crowds were large during both the day and night, but comparatively, few arrests were made. We scheduled a reduced personnel package due to a consistent pattern over the last few years of incident-free Memorial weekends. Since 2013, because of numerous violent incidents over the holiday weekend, we had an “all hands on deck” operation for the entire weekend. However, the pattern of large crowds with no critical incidents related to those crowds continues, and it is encouraging. I believe this is a direct result of efficient personnel allocation during critical times coupled with a very proactive and visible workforce. In combination of the unity of purpose for that workforce to identify illegally possessed firearms, criminal street gangs, and illegal drugs, our efforts are proving effective.
We conducted 4 traffic details since April 1, addressing various problem violations and locations, including loud mufflers/exhaust violations. I am happy to report in addition to hundreds of moving violation citations issued recently, we also issued 13 mobile noise citations (18-6 M.O. and F.S.S. 316.293). One of those cases led to three arrests for possession of illegal drugs.
We are in the final phases of processing two officer applicants for the now five vacant positions. Also our one officer trainees is almost completed with training and is on track at this time to go into solo status in mid-June. We also have some promising prospects in the beginning stages of the application process.
Our Police Memorial Ceremony was well attended and very special. Thank you to all of you who attended (photos attached).
Some of our Honor Guard members traveled to Washington D.C. for Police Memorial Week to pay tribute to Sergeant Dan Watts (photos attached).
