"The Memorial Day weekend was a very busy time for the Jacksonville Beach Police Department.
Officers responded to a total of 765 calls for service during this three-day period and made a total of fifteen arrests for various offenses.
The department received information in the early morning hours on Monday, May 27, of a potential unpermitted event to take place near the pier beginning at approximately 1400 hours later that day. Per our operational plan, in addition to the extra officers already scheduled, we reached out to our mutual aid partners in the area to request assistance, if needed.
The crowds were closely monitored throughout the afternoon, and several small disturbances were handled quickly in an effort to mitigate larger problems from forming. The overall number of pedestrians on the beach and in the downtown area began to subside around 1900 hours, however, officers remained vigilant to monitor crowd activity in key locations throughout the city.
At approximately 2100 hours, there was a report of a victim who requested assistance in the 300 block of Third Street, North. The victim was 16-years old and suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg. The victim was transported to a hospital for further treatment. The victim stated the incident occurred in the 100 Block of 2nd Avenue, North. There is limited suspect information at this time, and detectives are following up on leads.
At approximately 2300 hours, a female reported that a group of males displayed a firearm to her in an aggressive manner while she was walking in the 500 block of the beach near the pier. Officers responded and were able to locate and detain the suspects. A twelve-year-old suspect was subsequently arrested for Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Firearm by a Minor A seventeen-year-old co-defendant was also arrested for Possession of a Firearm by a Minor."
