In 1967, a man named Winthrop Bancroft donated 5 acres of land in Seminole Beach to the State of Florida with the requirement that it be preserved as a park. He also required it to be named after Dr. Kathryn Abbey Hanna who had passed away that year. Two years later, the City of Jacksonville gained ownership of the property. The City then began buying up more land in the Seminole Beach area until it had acquired a total of 450 acres. The park officially opened 50 years ago in the spring of 1972. It continues to provide a valuable place where people can enjoy recreational activities with family and get closer to nature.
