Towney Gilbert Kennard, 92, passed away comfortably at his home in Jacksonville Beach on Saturday, November 30, 2013.
Towney was born in Gainesville, Florida, on February 14, 1921. He spent most of his early life in Newberry, Florida, working on the family farm, but also lived in Tavares and West Palm Beach, Florida. He was a 1939 graduate of Newberry High School. He served in the US Navy in both WWII and the Korean War. After the war, he worked for the Gillette Company for 30 years before retiring in 1983. He spent the remaining years of his life enjoying his family, fishing and hunting, involvement in his churches - First Baptist Church of Jacksonville Beach and Ocean Park Baptist Church of Jacksonville Beach and in being the neighborhood greeter.
He was married on April 5, 1942 to the former Marian Rogers of Gainesville, who preceded him in death in 1991 after almost 50 years of marriage. He is survived by his brother, Jack Kennard of High Springs, Florida; daughter Ginger K. Petty and husband Charles of East Lansing, Michigan; son, Towney (Bubba) Kennard, Jr. and wife Gayle of St. Augustine, Florida; grandchildren Jennifer Gottlieb of Troy, Michigan; Karl Petty of Orinda, CA; Trey Kennard of Porter Corners, NY; McKenzie Watts of Raleigh, NC and Tim Kennard of Raleigh, NC; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday, at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 1701 Beach Blvd. Jacksonville Beach from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. A memorial service will be held at Ocean Park Baptist Church, 402 16th Ave. S., Jacksonville Beach, beginning at 11am on Saturday, December 7. A burial at the family plot in Evergreen Cemetery in Gainesville, FL, will follow the service at 3pm.
In lieu of flowers the family is asking that donations be made to Ocean Park Baptist Church, Jacksonville Beach, FL, in his honor or a charity of your choice .
